The United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) experienced a split in the mid-20th century that created a group of churches known as the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW). The split primarily centered around the issue of whether or not speaking in tongues was necessary for salvation.
The UPCI believed that speaking in tongues was a necessary sign of having received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, while the PAW believed that it was not necessary for salvation, and that there were other signs of the Holy Spirit's presence in a person's life.
The split led to tensions and disagreements between the two groups, but over time, many of these have been resolved and there are now efforts to work together in unity. However, some differences still remain between the UPCI and the PAW, and they are considered separate denominations within the pentecostal movement.
